Description:

Safmarine - Refrigerated motor ships (Dutch Built)
One of three refrigerated motor ships “S.A. Langkloof “, “S.A. Zebediela”, and “S.A.Hexrivier” were built for the export of frozen fruit from South Africa to the UK and Europe. They were built in Dutch yards and entered service in early to the mid-1960s. This class of ships were the first to be powered by diesel engines, fitted with an eight cylinder M.A.N K8Z70/120 low speed two stroke diesel engine developing approx. 9,600 BHP and a speed of 17 knots. For electrical power four MAN diesel engines drove AC alternators.

Hi Jim,
The Dutch coaster was LOOIERSGRACHT (1950 / 500 gt / IMo5211680). She was raised and repaired.

Those ships carried chilled or fridgerated fruit. Not Frozen fruit. I joined Langkloof in Rotterdam, December, 1963 for her maiden voyage, having been transferred from South African Seafarer in London. Captain James Trickey was the Master and Laurie Brown was Chief Engineer . Tragically she was involved in a collision with, and sank, a Dutch coaster whilst under Pilotage departing Antwerp 2nd January, 1964. Sadly some crew members of the coaster lost their lives in the icy waters of the Schelde. She returned to Antwerp for repairs to her bow. After loading general cargo, she finally sailed from London heading south to her homeport of Cape Town. I served on her until joining Weltevreden for her Maiden Voyage under Captain Robin Thompson and then joined Nederburg under Captain Alexander Johnstone for her maiden voyage. I also sailed on each of the three Glasgow built Safmarine reefers - Jim Pead, ex Safmariner, Adelaide, South Australia.

I did a trip on the SA Langkloof from Cape Town to Durban as a student radio officer in June 1976, a comfortable ship with good lines.
