Description:

Following BORDER LAIRD sailing from Avonmouth on the afternoon tide of 4th November 1965, so exactly fifty years ago today, was Ellerman Lines' 1947 Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, built CITY OF PRETORIA.

Early in 1967 she was sold to Japanese breakers through Greek intermediaries who renamed her PROXENEION. She sailed as such from Antwerp on 23rd February 1967 bound for Hsinkang (now Tianjin Xingang) via Singapore but suffered engine trouble en route and finally arrived at Izumi-ohtsu on 18th May 1967

Malcolm, I have deleted the IMO number that you applied, which was that of the Border Laird, that you also posted on the same day. In fact the ship was scrapped in 1967 and never had an official IMO number.

The ship was finishing a voyage to India and Pakistan and was in Karachi during bombing raids in the war. The next voyage was to South Africa and I joined her in Durban in Jan 1966 as a first trip cadet. The engine room skylights were still painted black !
