Description:

USA-Navy. Algol Class Fast Sea Lift Ship. There are only 8 of these ships in the fleet. This one is likely the Denebola. Seen here at former Navy Homeport New York/Staten Island. This ship appeared to lay idle at a New Jersey Naval facility for years, then moved to Staten Island, where it spent many months if not years. Some maintenance work appeared to be done and cargo loaded. One day it was replaced by a nearly identical ship and then possibly another in the months prior to Second Gulf War (coincidence, I don't know). In the background is the The Big Red Boat Cruise Line which had been seized due to creditors foreclosing.

They were recently "down graded" from MSC status to MARAD status. They are converted form Sealand fast container ships and kept in readiness for rapid deployment. While somewhat uneconomical to operate, their advantage is the ability to move large numbers of heavy combat vehicles at 30+ knots speed.

Nice pic Tom. This is indeed a Navy vessel. It is an Algol Class Fast Sea Lift Ship. There are only 8 of these ships in the fleet. This one may be the Denebola, but its hard to tell.
