Her stern decks were removed pretty quickly after she was raised and taken to Mokpo New Port, where they sifted through the removed structure, trying to locate the remains of the passengers still listed as "missing". Back then, the original plan was to scrap the vessel after the completion of the official inquiry, but it has since changed, and the wreck is now expected to become a monument, and a centerpiece of a seaside park.
