Typical, large for the period in which it was built, a general cargo ship. It was built by the Italian shipyard Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico in Trieste. The contracting party and first operator, the shipping company De La Rama Steamship Co. The first name he received was Dona Aniceta - registered under the Philippine flag. Later - briefly - the ship sailed under the US flag. In November 1950, the ship was purchased by the Polish Foreign Trade Center CENTROMOR for GAL (Gdynia America Linie Żeglugowe) to operate the newly established line to the ports of communist China (People's Republic of China). The ship was handed over to the Polish crew in Italy and under the new name of GENERAL BEM, with a full load, the ship set off on its inaugural voyage to People's China. An interesting fact is that in the first phase of her service under the Polish flag (in GAL), the hull of m/s GENERAL BEM was black, like other units of this shipowner. On January 2, 1951, the liquidated shipping companies: GAL, POLBRYT and ZEGLUGA POLSKA were transformed into new state-owned companies - POLSKIE OCEANIC LINES (PLO) and POLSKA ZEGLUGA MORSKA (currently known as POLSTEAM). With breaks the ship sailed on the Far Eastern PLO route, as far as I know, under the charter of the Chinese-Polish Society of Ship Brokers (known to this day as CHIPOLBROK). In 1959, m/s Generał Bem was the first merchant ship under the Polish flag to call at the SOREL port in Canada. In the early 1970s the ship was put up for sale. He found a buyer (Greek shipowner) in November 1970.
Sold and renamed MARCO PROSPERITY sailed until the summer of 1972. In August 1972 she was scrapped in Turkey.

Hello,
not so much information is available for this one - interesting, as there was not many ships of Italian origin under Polish flag (yes, "BATORY" and "PIŁSUDSKI" :-)
However, "Polskie Linie Oceaniczne 1951 - 2011" (by Adamczyk, Drzemczewski and Huras) says that the ship was bought in Italy by state broker "Centromor" in November 1950, for "Gdynia-America Lines" (GAL) as the owner, for China Line service.
Due to national reorganization, GAL ships were transferred to newly created Polish Ocean Lines on Januray 2nd, 1951.
Kind regards,
Marcin

Calling the thieving nationalization of three large private shipping companies (GAL, POLBRYT and ZEGLUGA POLSKA) and turning them into two state-owned companies is certainly a kind of euphemism. After all, along with the ships, property in the form of real estate was also seized. The headquarters of the Polish Shipping Company went into the possession of the Navy and the property of GAL - Dworzec Morski (today's Museum of Emigration) became the seat of several state-owned companies ...
Polish Ocean Lines received the building of the pre-war Social Insurance Institution as its headquarters. The authorities (who claimed to be representatives of the people) simply took over the fortunes acquired through hard work.
