Description:

A recent BBC article gave me an idea to upload this photo.
Built by Mitsubishi Kobe shipyard, this prototype vessel was capable of speeds of up to 8 knots by using a magnetohydrodynamic drive without any moving parts powered by a liquid helium-cooled superconductor. It's an exhibit now on display outside the Kobe Maritime Museum, Japan.
It was given an IMO number, too. :)

Sound a little bit like the Ford Sierra motor car !!!

Maybe because it was too advanced for the 'nineties. The idea proved workable, but it used up a lot of energy and there was a problem with the corrosion of the electrodes. Nowadays, as they have found new ways to solve these problems, MHD drive is beginning to attract attention again...

Cheers

I wonder why they didn't pursue that technology?
