Liberian tanker CIRCE (1952 / 11176 gt), which explosed on May 22nd 1967, some hours after leaving Sete bound to Napoli. All the crew die (38), except a Greek officer found on an up-turned lifeboat. 33 persons escaped in lifeboats but the weather was very bad, and the lifeboats capsized. The master and guys in duty on the wheelhouse were killed.
The aft part was towed to Marseilles by the tugs LAURENT CHAMBON and PHOCEEN.
The forward part, after unsuccessful towage attempts, was sunken by the French Navy, 60 km west of Ajaccio (Corsica), on May 24th.
