Description:

Submarine of the type “Biber” (“Beaver”) built in 1944 for German Kriegsmarine. Dimensions: 9,03 x 1,57 x 2,1 m, diving depth 20 m, range 100 seamiles at 6,5 knots above water, 8,5 seamiles at 5,3 knots under water, armament: twee 53,3 caliber G7E-torpedo’s, engine: 2,5 liter Opel Blitz petrol engine 32 hp. These small submarines were stationed at Hoek van Holland and Hellevoetsluis in the Netherlands and towed to sea to save fuel. Then sailing towards the Westerschelde, to sabotage Allied shipping on its way to liberated Antwerpen. After launching the torpedo’s the single crew had to leave the submarine and find a way to safety. This 313 was found in 1950 in the Westerschelde, still armed with one torpedo and one mine, and the remains of the crew inside. Now on display in a converted 40-feet container on the sea dike at Vlissingen.
