Description:
Coe Metcalf Shipping Ltd.’s 1970 Kowloon built coastal tanker ROBERT M. outbound in Eastham Channel exactly forty years ago today, on 7th May 1984. From 1977, she was a frequent visitor to the Canal with cargoes of bitumen.
Built as Cree for Jardine, Matheson & Co. of Hong Kong, and trading as far as Australia, she voyaged to the U.K. towards the end of 1976. In 1996, shortly before she was sold, her owner became James Fisher & Sons. On sale, she took the name Nesa R., managed from Ajman in the U.A.E.
She was scrapped at Gadani Beach in December 2009.

On a time charter to Shell and originally intended to run up the Mekong to Phnom Penh the funnel was half the height of the one in this photo - with a removable 'stove pipe' extension, the masts could also be lowered. Events put paid to that plan. She would load bitumen at Pulau Bukom for Muara, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Port Hedland, and at least once to Tanjung Priok. When not in the bitumen trade she would load fuel oil at Port Dickson for Telok Anson.
