"M" in engine type is for metric when Doxfords had finally decided to manufacture all engine components to metric units of measurement. They had always used metric for engine building but pipes and fittings were always imperial units, probably because most of the English suppliers of these parts worked in imperial measurements. For reasons unknown, the AFNE yard numbers related to Doxford engine contract numbers were changed during the building of the engines.
