Description:

Greek reefer seen laid up on the River Fal at King Harry Ferry on 8th July 1982.
All my research sources point her to being IMO#5421182.
6,303 g.t. built 1963. Ex: l/a South African Farmer, Langkloof-66, S.A. Langkloof-77, Langkloof-79, Monsone Universal-82.
BU Chittagong 29.8.84.
But surely not? She looks far too modern to have been built in 1963?

I sailed on the Langkloof as Radio Officer for almost 2 years. The name SOUTH AFRICAN FARMER was just about visible still under the paintwork. It changed from LANGKLOOF to S.A.LANGKLOOF during a trip off I had, sometime in September 1966.

Hi John,
I can confrima s well the year built of that vessel.
I took her as SA Langkloof in 1970 in the river Elbe. There are more sisters, the latest I think is built in 1969, (so that is a better date for the shape of teh ship).

Thanks Stumps and Gerolf,
yes I am now convinced of her identity!!! And yes Gerolf, I would have put her at early 70's.
I've posted a picture of the ex Bank Liner on here Stumps, just do a search under 'Newcrest' and wait... and wait, and eventually it comes up :-D

She was build by Verolme Heusden The Netherlands.
S.A.Hexrivier and S.A.Zebediela are sister ships even build at the Verolme yard.
Three Beauty reefers and i work on them at the yard to make her nice and good looking women 1963.Another sistership was build in G-B named Letaba.

greetings from the Netherlands.

I sailed on the SA Langkloof as Radio Officer in 1969. She and her sisters really were lovely reefer ships. I subsequently packed up the sea and worked ashore in Cape Town as a Ships Agent. I worked for Aero Marine Shipping, later known as Freight Marine Shipping, and had a great time working with so many shipping companies and looked after their ships calling in at CapeTown.

Best Wishes

Nice photograph - I'm sure she had a sister too as rememeber seeing both back in the 60's and 70's . Similar name . Anyway, thought that was an old Andy. Weir job lying second bottom . Think the "Ashbank" was one of the H&W., Belfast jobs.

John,
no that's correct. I have cross referred by Lloyds register and Lloyds index. She arrived at the River Fal on 23/06/1982.
It is one and the same .

Built by Verolme - to a modern design !

regards,
Rick

Thanks for confirming that Rick. It's incredible to think that the Newcrest (ex Ashbank) lying alongside her is just a few years older! She must have looked well ahead of her time when built.
