Hi,
In the book 'Modern Shipping Disasters' (by Norman Hooke) :
"The Panamanian motor tanker ESPERANZA II was bound Kharg Island, in ballast, to load crude oil cargo when, on May 13, 1984, she was struck by Exocet missile fired by an Iraqi warplane south of Kharg Island. Immediately set on fire, the blazing vessel was abandoned by her crew, nome of whom was injured. After the fire had been extinguished with tug assistance, the ESPERANZA II, which had a hull and machinery insurance value of $3m, was towed to Bushire; where it was ascertained that her engine-room and accomodation had been gutted in the inferno.
Declared a a war constructive total loss, she remained in the Gulf for three years until being reported in a partially sunken condition in lat. 25°35,5'N, long. 055°10,2'E, on March 28, 1987, while being towed to Gadani Beach, Pakistan, having been sold to Pakistan shipbreakers for demolition. She was refloated some six weeks later, after which she continued her voyage to the breakers yard at Gadani Beach, where she arrived on May 21, 1987, to be scrapped."
Regards,
Yvon
